BART Makes Game-Changing Investment to Modernize the System

Posted In:

The BART Board of Directors on Thursday (Jan. 9) awarded a $798 million contract to Hitachi Rail STS USA, Inc. to design and build a modern communications based train control system that will dramatically improve future BART service and capacity. Replacing the current train control system, which is 47 years old, will allow BART to run more trains closer together and significantly enhance Transbay ridership capacity. The contract is expected to be the largest BART award this decade. The Bay Area Council led the 2016 campaign to pass Measure RR, which is providing more than half the funding for the new train control system.
