Caltrain Electrification Chugging Along

Caltrain is on-track for a fully electrified fleet! This past Saturday (July 29), Peninsula and Silicon Valley residents got a sneak peak of the shiny new trains, tricked out with on-board displays, Wi-Fi, power outlets, and more. The new fleet will not only improve rider experience and comfort, but represents a giant leap towards a greener transit future. Electrified trains reduce emissions, noise and air pollution, and traffic congestion, to the great benefit of the entire Bay Area.

But you know what they say – no pain, no train. To accommodate electrification testing, Caltrain will offer reduced service between August 7 and 25. It’s unfortunate that commuters will have to weather the inconvenience, but they can take satisfaction in knowing their sacrifice these next few weeks will help usher in the next generation of Caltrain!

The Bay Area Council has been a staunch advocate of the electrification and modernization project from the very beginning, and we are pleased to see things chugging-along. The Council helped assemble the original package of federal, state and regional funding for the project, and will continue to advocate for modernized transit across the region. Electric Caltrains are leaving the station!
