Council Convenes Oakland Stakeholders to Discuss Crime, Safety and Economy

On Monday (June 30), the Bay Area Council convened members, partners, and local stakeholders in downtown Oakland to debut and discuss the Bay Area Council Economic Institute’s new report on Oakland crime and economic trends: Making Oakland Safe and its Economy Strong: A Vision for Lasting Change.
The report lays out a clear, data-driven roadmap for reversing Oakland’s economic decline by addressing persistent public safety challenges. A product of extensive public safety and economic data analysis, stakeholder interviews, and research on public safety best practices, the report identifies 10 actionable recommendations across funding, governance, operations, and partnerships and community.
After a presentation on the report, its findings, and next steps, attendees heard from a cross-sector panel including Dr. Holly Joshi of Oakland’s Department of Violence Prevention, Oakland Police Department Deputy Chief Anthony Tedesco, and Savlan Hauser of the Jack London Improvement District and Oakland BID Alliance. Together, they highlighted the urgent need for coordinated solutions and sustained investment in safety, trust, and economic recovery.

As a next step, we’re inviting members to help shape our priorities by ranking the top recommendations they’d like to see the Council focus on in the months ahead, co-sign a letter to city leaders, and join our coalition to make Oakland a safer place to live, work, and visit.
