Council-Sponsored Homelessness Bills Advancing
Three bills the Bay Area Council is co-sponsoring to address homelessness are continuing to advance in the legislature. This week, Council Homelessness Committee co-chair Elizabeth Funk (DignityMoves) and Council Senior Vice President Adrian Covert joined Sen. Josh Becker in testifying in support of SB 606 in the Assembly Housing Committee. The bill moves next to the Assembly Local Government Committee. SB 606 conditions future state Homeless Housing Assistance Program grants on local governments utilizing existing state laws to expand shelter access and end encampments.
The Council is also continuing to advocate for SB 16 (Blakespear), which would condition state Homeless Housing Assistance Program grants on close coordination between city and county governments on scaling interim housing and will be heard in the Assembly Housing Committee on July 17, and AB 255 (Haney), which would allow for the use of state funding for recovery housing.
