Berkeley Lab Gets Big Boost for Quantum Computing

Important work that Berkeley Lab is leading to develop quantum computing technology got a significant boost this week when the Department of Energy announced it plans to invest $125 million in the Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA). QSA, which Berkeley Lab runs in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories, builds and demonstrates quantum technologies and computing prototypes to transform quantum information science into breakthroughs for society. In other words, building incredibly fast and powerful new computers.
These advances will enable scientists to use quantum computers to design new materials, discover new chemicals and reactions, and accelerate breakthroughs in AI, energy, physics, biology, and chemistry. The Bay Area Council is proud to call Berkeley Lab a member of our Bay Area Science and Innovation Consortium (BASIC), a group of the region’s leading public and private research institutions working to advance the Bay Area’s innovation leadership. We are also proud to have University of California Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons serve on our Executive Committee.
