BART Energizes New Civic Center Substation

BART has achieved a significant milestone with the energization of a state-of-the-art traction power substation at Civic Center Station in late April, marking the first new substation facility built in the system’s core since the original BART network was constructed in the 1960s. The new substation increases energy available to power BART trains in San Francisco by nearly 18% and provides immediate benefits including improved reliability, redundancy, and enhanced operational flexibility with modern monitoring and diagnostic capabilities. The Bay Area Council was at the forefront of the campaign to pass Measure RR back in 2016, and we are pleased to see this critical transit investment paying dividends for Bay Area riders through projects like this that strengthen our region’s transportation infrastructure.
