Tech & Innovation

From the birth of the technology industry in Silicon Valley to the rise of AI powerhouses today, the Bay Area is the world’s undisputed capitol for technology and innovation. We attract the most investment and the best talent. We are home to many of the world’s largest and leading technology companies, iconic companies spanning a range of industries from AI and software, to biotech, media and space. Protecting and growing our technology and innovation leadership is one of the Bay Area Council’s top priorities.

Lead Priorities

Champion Bay Area AI leadership. The Bay Area, from San Francisco to Silicon Valley and beyond, is the epicenter of an exciting global AI technology boom, bringing with it a wave of new jobs, companies and investment. Half the generative AI companies on the globe are located in our region as well as the chip and other hardware companies that power the technology. The Bay Area Council is working to protect and grow our AI leadership by advocating for state and federal policies that will strengthen our competitive edge, encourage more investment and unleash the full potential of this technology.

Accelerate and expand data center capacity. At the heart of the region’s AI leadership are the data centers powering this new technology. The Bay Area Council is working with business and government partners to ensure our region has the data center horsepower, along with the energy generation/transmission/distribution capacity, our AI and other digital innovators need to compete and grow.

Advance intellectual property leadership. The Bay Area is one of the world’s leading engines of commercial and scientific discovery, and ensuring the integrity of our intellectual property system, including our nation-leading patent engine, is critical to growing our technology sector. The Bay Area Council works with our technology and other partners to advocate for strong intellectual property protections.

Support sensible immigration policies. High-skilled immigrants over many, many decades have played an important and leading role in advancing the Bay Area’s technology and innovation industry. The Bay Area Council advocates for comprehensive immigration reform that recognizes the importance of high-skilled immigrants to maintaining our economic competitiveness.

Advocate for strong science and research investment. The Bay Area’s universities and public and private science and research institutions are the fountainhead of our technology and innovation economy, producing transformative discoveries and launching new industries and companies. The Bay Area Council’s Bay Area Science and Innovation Consortium (BASIC) convenes the leaders of our major research institutions to advocate for robust investment and other policies that maintain and grow our scientific leadership.
