Council Reforms Help Propel Big Housing Win in San Francisco

A bold plan advanced by San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and supported by the Bay Area Council that promises to authorize more than 80,000 new homes across the city over the next eight years won approval yesterday (Dec. 2) at the Board of Supervisors. The Family Zoning Plan leverages important statewide reforms (SB 828, Wiener) the Bay Area Council secured in 2018 that put sharper teeth and greater accountability into requirements that cities take stronger action to address California’s housing shortage and affordability crisis. We applaud Mayor Lurie for his leadership in advancing the Family Zoning Plan, which will allow taller and denser housing in key areas around the city.
The Council’s work on SB 828 prompted local governments in the Bay Area to plan for 441,000 new homes over an eight-year period. As we continue to work on reforms to local and state housing laws, the Council is doubling down on our successful work to bring down the many onerous fees and extraneous code costs that can add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cost of a single home.
