China’s Lessons for Restarting the Economy after COVID-19

On April 6, the Bay Area Council’s China Initiative welcomed MEBO-International Chairman Kevin Xu for a virtual discussion about the steps businesses in China are taking to transition employees back into an office environment as the COVID-19 threat subsides. Xu gave an on-the-ground perspective of how local policies to support businesses and employees differ from city to city and which, from his perspective, have been the most effective in helping restart the economy.

Abhilash Mishra, Director of Kevin Xu Initiative on Science, Technology, and Global Development at the University of Chicago, discussed a new developmental tool that allows governments, policymaker, and private agencies to estimate surge capacity in the U.S. healthcare system in real-time. Abhilash’s project quantifies social distancing, population density, ICU capacity, and hospital bed capacity to the county level to identify high-need locations before surges happen.
