Council Partners with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, Tech Companies to Launch “AI for All” Platform

The Bay Area Council was proud to stand with San José Mayor Matt Mahan today (Nov. 5) at the national GovAI Coalition Summit where he announced a Bay Area Council-created “AI for All” (www.aiforall.com), a first-of-its-kind public private collaboration with the city, the Council, GoogleOpenAI and Anthropic to make free AI education and tools available to every resident. Bay Area Council Chief Operating Officer John Grubb joined Mayor Mahan and leaders from the three partnering companies at the dais and said AI for All puts San Jose in a leading position to be the most AI literate city on the planet.  The Bay Area Council will be expanding AI for All to other Bay Area and Silicon Valley cities in the months ahead.

The initiative builds  on San José’s growing national leadership in responsible AI — from safer streets to smarter public services — and advances the city’s and our region’s vision  to become the emerging AI capital of the world. It highlights the Council’s strong  focus on elevating the region’s technology and innovation economy and  leadership.

“The AI revolution is here — and there’s no better place to be a part of it than San Jose,” said Mayor Mahan. “This first-in-the-nation initiative makes sure everyone, from students to seniors, can seize the opportunities of this new era and be prepared for the pitfalls. The coming years will determine if AI’s proliferation will drive inequality or opportunity, and we’re not waiting to find out — we’re shaping it for the collective good of humanity.”

Through AI for All, residents will gain access to a single city portal with free courses, training paths, and certifications from leading AI companies. Content will be available in multiple languages and tailored for everyday use — from boosting productivity at work to exploring new learning opportunities at school or home. The city will also partner with libraries, community centers, and schools to ensure residents without reliable internet access can participate.

“San José continues to show the kind of bold leadership that keeps our region at the forefront of innovation,” said Kelly Cure, Vice President, Workforce Policy, Bay Area Council. “By working hand in hand with industry and community partners, the city is helping ensure AI creates opportunity for everyone across the Bay Area.”

The new citywide program builds on the work that has made San José a national model for using AI responsibly to improve public services and deliver results for residents.

Launched by San José in 2023, the GovAI Coalition has now grown to more than 900 member agencies representing over 150 million residents nationwide, making it the largest local-government network in the country advancing responsible, open, and replicable AI practices. A joint steering committee — including representatives from the city of San Jose, Bay Area Council, participating companies, and community partners — will oversee implementation and ensure the program remains equitable and accessible.
