Council Focuses on AI’s Impact on Healthcare Talent

A new Bay Area Council joint healthcare and workforce initiative is bringing together employers, educators, and philanthropy to develop regional strategies at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare workforce policy.

On September 23, Samuel Merritt University hosted the kickoff of the Council’s new AI and Healthcare Workforce Working Group in Oakland. Drawing on research presented to the committees earlier this year, the group is identifying where AI is likely to reshape clinical and administrative roles and which training pathways will best prepare workers for those changes. The goal is to ensure that AI-driven transformation in healthcare supports, rather than undermines, high-road employment and workforce quality across the Bay Area.

Over the next 6 to 12 months, the group aims to select a small set of priority occupations to tackle regionally, such as medical assistants, imaging, social work, and allied health. From there, it will work toward a replicable model for employer–educator collaboration that can be shared statewide and nationally. To engage in the AI and Healthcare Workforce Working Group, please contact Vice President Patrick Kallerman.
