California’s Energy Priorities: A Conversation with CEC Chair David Hochschild
The Bay Area Council’s Climate and Energy Committee this week (Aug. 18) welcomed California Energy Commission Chair David Hochschild for a wide-ranging conversation on the state’s energy priorities and the path toward a cleaner, more affordable, and more reliable energy future.
Hochschild highlighted the significant progress California has made in transitioning its electricity system, noting that 67% of the state’s electricity now comes from zero-carbon resources and that California is increasingly reaching periods where clean energy meets or exceeds demand. The presentation also underscored the rapid pace of electrification across California’s economy. From transportation and buildings to ports and heavy-duty vehicles, electrification is reshaping how Californians consume energy.
Members engaged Hochschild in a robust Q&A about the challenges accompanying this transition, with questions spanning energy affordability, reliability, battery safety, electrification, and the role of different energy resources in California’s future portfolio. The conversation explored how solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, battery storage, and other resources can work together to meet California’s growing energy needs while accounting for the rise of electrified transportation and data centers.
Affordability was a particular focus of the discussion. Hochschild highlighted the economic benefits that energy-efficiency and appliance standards have delivered to California households and businesses, citing an estimated $77 billion in savings from 2019 through 2025.
The discussion offered Committee members an opportunity to engage directly with one of the state’s leading energy policymakers on both the progress California has made and the challenges that remain. As electricity demand continues to grow, the conversation reinforced the importance of maintaining a diverse energy portfolio while supporting California’s economic growth.
