Council Convenes Top Leaders on AI and Cybersecurity

The Bay Area Council this week (July 8) hosted an important discussion with leaders from the region’s AI, business and diplomatic community on the growing intersection of AI and cybersecurity. Andrew Reddie, founder of the Berkeley Risk and Security Lab, Mo Qayoumi, former President of San Jose State University and former Chief Adviser for Infrastructure and Technology to the President of Afghanistan) and John Hering, Director of Cybersecurity Policy and Diplomacy at Microsoft, shared their views on how AI is changing the game in both cybersecurity offense and defense, international efforts to create shared governance frameworks, the merits of both closed and open AI systems in managing cybersecurity threats, and the role of business in standard setting and risk management. Bay Area Council Economic Institute Senior Director Sean Randolph moderated the exchange.

This was the third of four sessions the Bay Area Council is organizing on AI strategy and policy. Insights from these discussions will help inform a white paper on AI policy and regulation that will be delivered at a forum the Council is organizing to accompany the APEC Summit scheduled for October in Gyeongju, Korea.
