Former Council Chair Nelson Rising Passes Away

Nelson Rising

Nelson Rising, a titan of California real estate and politics and Bay Area Council Chair from 2003-2005, has passed away at the age of 81.

Rising was a former CEO of Catellus Development Corporation and a critical piece of some of California’s most iconic projects. At Catellus, he spearheaded the development of Mission Bay, the largest mixed-use development in San Francisco’s history. One of the most significant achievements of his 50 year career, a Mission Bay street even bears Rising’s name: Nelson Rising Lane.

In addition to California’s literal landscape, Rising left his impact on the state’s political landscape as well. Rising served as campaign manager for U.S. Senator John Tunney’s successful run in 1970 and was chairman of all five of Tom Bradley’s victorious campaigns for L.A. Mayor.

A consummate executive, Rising will be remembered for his leadership and his drive to make a better California. Our condolences go out to his wife Sharon and their family.
