Council Mourns Passing of James Fang

The Bay Area Council is mourning the untimely passing of San Francisco leader James Fang from natural causes at the age of 58. James was a devoted community servant and business leader who played key roles in running his family’s media empire, which at one time included the AsianWeek newspaper, Independent Newspaper Group and San Francisco Examiner.

James also served on the BART Board of Directors for 24 years (1994-2014), including three stints as President, and was a partner with the Council in working to expand and improve the mass transit system. James also served as Chair of the San Francisco-Shanghai Sister City Committee (1996-2020) created by former Mayor Dianne Feinstein. That committee helped pave the way for the Council’s later work in China and we continue to partner with the committee to deepen and expand the Bay Area’s long relationship with China. We extend our deepest condolences to James’ mother, Florence Fang, his brothers, Ted Fang and Douglas Fang, his wife, Daphne, and the entire Fang family.
