COUNCIL HAILS POSITIVE RESULTS OF COMMUTER SHUTTLES PILOT PROGRAM

The Bay Area Council Tuesday (Oct. 6) hailed a new report by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) that found commuter shuttles eliminate almost 52 million vehicle miles travelled a year from the region’s badly congested roads and highways. The report was part of an 18-month pilot program that evaluated the commuter shuttles operation. The Council represents most of the companies that pay for commuter shuttles, as well as the contractors that operate them, and worked with the SFMTA in developing the pilot program. The report also found that shuttle conflicts with MUNI declined 35 percent, to less than one conflict every two hours, during the pilot. With 17,000 one-way passenger trips every day, the shuttles remove the equivalent of 2 million single-passenger car trips a year.
