Up, Up and Away: United Bringing New Jobs to SFO

Bay Area Council member United is planning to add 2,200 jobs at San Francisco International Airport next year as part of a purchase of 100 new wide-body jets and 270 smaller jets, the largest such acquisition in commercial aviation history. The new jobs include everything from pilots and baggage handlers to ramp workers to flight attendants. The new jobs will boost United’s presence at SFO to 12,200 employees and support the airline’s expansion of service, including new nonstop flights to Rome and Brisbane, Australia. The announcement brings more good news for SFO, which was recently named the best airport in the country by the Wall Street Journal.

The Economic Benefits of Multilingual Learning

California is home to nearly a quarter of the nation’s foreign-born population, and multilingual children represent 40% of the state’s public-school enrollment, a number that only continues to grow among the state’s youngest children. Unlike programs that have traditionally pushed students to learn English above all else, programs designed to support students’ home languages in addition to English – also know as multilingual programs – are increasingly gaining support. This study finds that supporting multilingual learning among California’s youngest children can improve educational outcomes, boost household incomes, and give California companies the edge needed to compete on the world stage.
