Shanghai & Hangzhou
May 31st - June 4, 2011
Cloud computing is coming to China in a big way. Both China's 12th Five-Year Plan and publications by the State Council have made it clear – cloud computing will be a crucial part of the next-generation information technology industry in China. Official estimates suggest that by the end of 2015 the sector may create a market valued at 750 billion to one trillion RMB, taking up a share of over 15 percent in the strategic emerging industries. As a result, there is strong competition in China’s five designated cloud cities – Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Wuxi – to attract the best and the brightest from both within and outside of China.
Cloud computing is in its infancy in China, though, and like in any new market, business in China comes with challenges. Relationship management is a critical competence, as are strategies to get comfortable with a new business culture and operate in a different language. Numerous Bay Area firms have already braved China and found it an exhilarating, profitable market for their companies, and the Bay Area Council is excited to help more organizations do so.
We hope you join us on this trade mission to explore China's new policies and programs designed to encourage US cloud computing companies expanding in China, help you find partners and customers, and get to know the key government leaders for this industry.
This program is built with cloud computing technology companies and professionals in mind. Our core programming will take place on June 1-4, with a welcome reception the night of May 31. In the time span of four days, through individual meetings, conferences, and in-depth, interactive presentations, participants will learn about the Chinese market, meet potential customers or partners, talk with already established Bay Area businesses like Intel, Oracle, and Union Bank, and otherwise prepare to expand one's business or knowledge in China.
June 1 - 3, we will hold meetings with government, business and academic leaders in Shanghai, highlighting two districts – Yangpu and Minhang – where companies can find strong state and university support for their growth. You will hear from Chinese companies actively seeking foreign partners, as well as the government representatives who can help your company access favorable policies for talent, real estate, taxation, and investment.
Finally, on June 4, we will travel to Hangzhou, another designated cloud computing center in the Yangtze River Delta region, to get a better idea of what business opportunities look like in China’s second-tier cities as presented by both government and companies. You will learn more about the city’s tentative plans to build an infrastructure and energy-focused cloud cluster with companies like Alipay, Taobao, GE, China Telecom, and others.
We will also utilize “downtime” during meals and receptions to invite participation of experienced expats and local businessmen to provide analysis on market trends and candid feedback on challenging issues such as hiring, protecting IP, building a brand, and brokering new relationships in the public and private sectors.
