Water

The Bay Area Council works to key relationships to achieve needed investments in the water infrastructure that would include water storage, more reliable conveyance systems, and habitat restoration.

Water Policy Overview

The California Delta, a 700,000-acre collection of islands and waterways just east of the San Francisco Bay Area, is the heart of the California water system providing water to 2/3 of all Californians and well over 3 million Bay Area residents and habitat for fish and species.

Today, the Delta's future and the structure and governance of California’s water system is in play.  The Bay Area Council provides guidance to state leaders on what the vision for a sustainable Delta should be and how it should be managed.

Recent Accomplishments

• Played key role to create agreement on state water system and bond measure.

• Led and passed SB 918 to direct the State Department of Public Health to develop criteria for safely using recycled water to augment water supplies.

Priorities

• Protect the Bay-Delta ecosystem and water supply reliability for the Bay Area and state

• Establish policies on how to best use water, especially in the agriculture sector to avoid the waste of water.

• Promote policies and lead disaster planning efforts to fix California’s water infrastructure.

California's economy depends on a reliable, affordable, and adequate supply of high-quality water. Supplies are currently maintained only by intensive management of complex, overtaxed, and aging water infrastructure. By 2020, California’s population is projected to grow almost 50 percent, to more than 47 million people. The Water Policy Committee recognizes that water is a statewide issue and as such solutions will need to be crafted at the state level. Because of the state’s aging and overtaxed water infrastructure, the Water Policy Committee works to craft statewide solutions for Northern and Southern California.
